Board of Directors Suspends Use of Mosquito Misting Systems; $1,000 Fine for Use

At the KICA Board of Director’s meeting, on October 2, 2006, President Dick Sula announced that the use of mosquito misting systems by members on Kiawah Island is suspended effective upon membership notification. Members found to be using mosquito misting systems after they have been notified of the suspension will be levied a $1,000.00 penalty. Mr. Sula read the following statement at the meeting explaining the board’s action.

“The EPA has serious concerns, especially the proximity of water, and has been studying the issue on a broad basis. KICA is responsible for the lake system and is concerned about the potential impact of the use of mosquito misting systems. KICA will continue to research the subject and until such time as we have more information about the potential impact, KICA hereby suspends the operation of new and existing mosquito misting systems. The KICA board will amend its rules and regulations to impose a fine of $1,000 per incident for members who use mosquito misting systems after it has given members notice. KICA will notify the town, the ARB and current installation contractors. Staff will notify members via instant news flashes, website, and the Digest and will also notify by certified mail, those members whom KICA has observed to have mosquito misting systems.”

For more information about mosquito misting systems and the potential damage that the systems pose to the local environment, please see the September 2006 Digest article, “Mosquito Misting Systems.” (PDF)

At this time, KICA is actively gathering more information about mosquito misting systems. As we learn more, we will post that information to the website.
