Private Golf Carts
The use of private golf carts on Kiawah’s roads and leisure trails is prohibited, effective July 1, 2000. The policy was formally adopted at the May 11, 2000 board meeting.
Golf carts which have been in use by KICA members prior to July 1, 2000 can be grandfathered, provided they meet/adhere to the following criteria:
  1. Maximum allowable speed is 15 mph. If speed is over 20 mph, it must be registered with the state, just like a car.
  2. The golf cart must have been purchased before July 1, 2000. Please provide a copy of the bill of sale or MSO (Manufacturer’s Sales Order), if available.
  3. Please complete the Application on the reverse and attach a copy of the bill of sale/MSO. Submit this to the KICA Member Services Department, and a representative will issue a special decal. The decal will be placed on the right front of the cart as one faces it, where it is clearly visible, to the right of where a headlight would normally be. If you have registered and titled the cart (for higher speeds), you will be issued a regular member decal. Members are permitted 3 decals per property at no charge. This would count as one of the three decals.
  4. KICA will only grandfather the initial cart, and only to the member first registering it. If you replace the grandfathered cart, the new cart will not be eligible for a decal and use cannot be permitted on the island. If you transfer or sell the cart to another property owner, the decal is no longer valid, and the new owner may not use the cart on the island.
Rules for Use:
  • Golf carts are restricted by KICA to use on leisure trails. You may drive the cart on a private KICA road for very short distances to reach the trail. Golf cart drivers are required to yield the right-of-way to all other traffic - pedestrians, skaters, bikers, joggers, etc.
  • Obey all trail signage, i.e., stop signs.
  • The golf cart may only be used by licensed drivers, and only during daylight hours.
Note: to apply to register a “grandfathered” golf cart, please print out the application, fill it out, and send it by mail, with a copy of the bill of sale, to:
