Hurricane Information
As a legal municipality, the Town of Kiawah Island has official authority and responsibility for the health, safety, and wellfare of its citizens. Its emergency awareness plan can be wiewed by clicking here
Most Kiawah Island Owners are keenly aware of the danger of hurricanes and are prepared to take appropriate steps if a "named storm"makes landfall on or near the island. Awareness not withstanding, hurricane season (June 1 to Nov. 30) is upon us, so KICA members should first take a look at nature's power in the adjacent photo, and then plan for how they will react if something similar to 2004's Hurricane Frances strikes South Carolina.
First, members with computers can monitor tropical storm action in the Atlantic by adding the website
www.weather.com/maps/maptype/satelliteworld/tropicalatlanticsatellite_large.html to their favorites list and checking it frequently. Second, they can follow the advice published in the annual "Hurricane Preparedness" section of the Charleston Post and Courier and in many guides available at local grocers, banks, etc. And finally, they can check the Town of Kiawah Island's website, call toll-free at (888) KIAWAH2 (542-9242) or localy at 768-9166 to determine what action should be taken if a storm approaches. The above satellite picture of Hurricane Frances makes it clear that all tropical storms should be taken seriously and Kiawah Island owners should be prepared if one approaches the area.

Members storing boats at any of KICA's boat storage facilities (Cinder Creek, Sora Rail Road Storage, Kestrel Court Storage) are advised that KICA is not responsible for securing members' boats in the event of a storm. We would also like to remind members to make periodic on-site inspections of their boats/canoes to make sure that they are kept in good repair. Also, take care to empty boat covers of standing water to prevent tears in tarps and water damage.

While the Town of Kiawah has official authority over the island in the event of a hurricane or tropical storm, KICA will also make every effort to keep this website updated in such an event. Please keep in mind that employees may be making these updates from a remote site, possibly on battery power subject to their own personal circumstances. KICA's responsibilities during such an emergency are outlined in this Disaster Awareness flyer. If you are not able to find the most current information on this site, please check the Town of Kiawah Island website or the Emergency Information page of Charleston County's website.
